Because Versions officially released it’s Beta today, I dug out this draft that had been unpublished for a long time (It was intended to be published in addition to the Versions Beta announcement one year ago):

The best Open Source Software for 2006 has been chosen with the first annual Sourceforge Community Choice Awards. The list of winners brings up very powerful and useful tools.

My favorite winners are…

• IPCop Firewall (Security – 3rd place)
• phpMyAdmin (SysAdmin – 1st place)
• and TightVNC (SysAdmin – 2nd place).

Really sweet.

Scribus ist eine Open Source Desktop Publishing Software für Mac OS X, Linux und neuerdings auch Windows (Daher heisst der Release “Egalité” – Gleichheit).

Für fragwürdig hielt ich zuerst die Farbverbindlichkeit sowie die PDF-Standardkonformität (Bei QuarkXPress ist immerhin Pantone involviert und Adobe hat den PDF-Standard definiert), aber laut Dokumentation ist der PDF/X-3 Standard implementiert und man kann ICC-Profile zum Farbmanagement hinzufügen, was bereits europäischen und amerikanischen Druckstandards folgt.

Das Interface sieht in den Screenshots recht gut und aufgeräumt aus. Als frischer InDesign-Umsteiger vom Usability-Desaster QuarkXPress gebe ich so einer Software gern eine Chance und werde daher Scribus mal installieren.

Das RoundCube Webmail Projekt.

RoundCube Webmail ist ein Browser-basierter IMAP client mit einem anwendungsähnlichen User-Interface. Es bietet die gleichen Funktionen wie ein konventioneller E-Mail Client, wie z.B. MIME Support, Adressbuch, Ordnerverwaltung und Nachrichtenfilter.

RoundCube Webmail ist PHP- und MySQL basiert. Das Benutzer-Interface ist mittels CSS und XHTML vollständig individualisierbar.

Das Ganze ist noch in der Alpha-Phase (Features wie Filter, Volltext-Suche und HTML-Mails layouten fehlen daher noch) aber das bisher Geschaffte sieht schon sehr gut aus. Die Online-Demo sollte man unbedingt mal ausprobieren: Vom “Feeling” der Benutzung her ist das schon ziemlich nahe an einer Desktop-Anwendung. Das ist Web 2.0!
